This 36th annual edition of the Readers’ Choice Awards, which tallied across their categories the votes of more than 525,000, named the Spa at Winvian Farm the “Best Spa in the World,” followed up by Lake Austin Spa Resort in Austin Texas, Mii Amo in Sedona, Arizona, Lucknam Park Hotel & Spa in Wiltshire, England, and Palazzo Fiuggi in Italy’s Lazio region.

The same poll saw Winvian Farm come in Number One in the Top 20 Destination Spa Resorts in the United States. To reflect on these achievements, we chatted with Winvian Spa Manager Lauren Beecher—read on for our full conversation!

Why do you think Conde Nast Traveler readers have chosen the Winvian spa as the number one spa in the country?

Because it’s unique. And it’s much different than many spas in the region. The Winvian spa is a very intimate space. When you come here it’s all about tranquility. We’re also very friendly. And everyone here gives 100% all of the time. When guests arrive, they feel all this, so much so they voted us number one in the U.S.

What’s the driving philosophy behind the spa?

I want every guest to have the very best experience possible. We work hard to pair each guest with the right therapist, each an expert in her or his field. Getting the match right between the guest and the treatment specialist is the difference between an excellent experience and a superb one. I also strive toward perfection in everything I do and I expect as much from our team.

Tell me about your leadership style and its role in building a successful spa experience?

I want every staffer to come and do their very best all the time, with each and every guest. I am both supportive of and demanding of our players. We have created a family-like team where we all count and rely on each other to make the guest experience exceptional.

How about your team? What role have they played in the #1 designation?

Everyone here–the aestheticians, the treatment specialists, the receptionists–care deeply about our guests and have exceptional training and education. They’re warm and friendly and take their roles seriously. It’s not just a job to them. They’re passionate and I believe that each one of them brings out the best in each other making us a cohesive team.

How do you describe the Winvian spa to people who have never experienced it?

I always go back to these words: we’re a small, intimate, warm and welcoming spa. It’s not at all intimidating when guests walk through the door. They exhale because everything is just so beautiful, so relaxing. The team here is really the best in the profession. Many have been here for a long time and they chose to be here because of the setting and the work environment.

Any final thoughts?

Yes, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Maggie Smith (Winvian’s owner) and her leadership. Everyone has deep respect for Maggie. She has allowed and supported us to create an oasis for guests. I think that’s because Winvian is owned by a family, not some large corporation, and at that, led by a woman. Whenever Maggie walks through the door she makes everyone–guests and staff–feel special.
