Agricultural Fairs in the Winvian Neighborhood
As our New England summer here in the Litchfield Hills crescendos to its glorious height, the bounty of the season is beginning to roll in—and it’ll of course keep rolling in through the autumn harvest.
One of the really timeless joys you can experience firsthand this time of year as a guest of ours at Winvian Farm is attending an agricultural fair: that age-old celebration of the ripe riches coming in from farm and field, and of rural culture in general. It’s a recipe for wonderful homegrown food—and for old-fashioned fun that never loses its appeal!
Here’s a roundup of some of the upcoming fairs in our greater neighborhood, easily reached from your luxury countryside retreat at Winvian Farm.
Wolcott County Fair (August 18-20)
Better than 30,000 people attend this big and much-loved soiree, which fills a lively three days with pony rides, racing pigs, antique farm machinery, tractor pulls, nightly fireworks shebangs—and a whole lot more. It all goes down only about a half-hour’s drive from Winvian Farm!
Terryville Lions Club Fair (August 25-27)
From tractor pulls and arts-and-crafts vendors to livestock shows, wood-chopping competitions, and (more) racing pigs, the Terryville Lions Club Fair—now in its very respectable 69th running—is always a guarantee of a good time. The Terryville Fairgrounds where the action goes down are just 15 miles or so from us.
Goshen Fair (September 2-4)
Alongside lots of food, arts-and-crafts, and farm animals of every description, the Goshen Fair—more than a century old and still going strong—includes all sorts of country-style contests: from pie-eating and skillet-throwing to hay-bale tossing and a grownup spelling bee. A mere 10 miles from your Winvian Farm slice of heaven!
Bethlehem Fair (September 8-10)
The charming hamlet of Bethlehem is just a stone’s throw south from Winvian Farm, and for the better part of 100 years it’s been throwing its own delightful country fair. Amid the classic fairground delights is a whole lot of artistry, including horse-drawing and photography exhibitions.
Harwinton Fair (October 6-8)
Set against the crisp and colorful glories of Northwest Connecticut’s early fall, the Harwinton Fair—which’ll celebrate its 161st iteration in 2017—dazzles with its horse-pulling demos, vintage tractors, pig races, magic shows, bluegrass tunes, Civil War displays, and the unmissable Rabbit Costume Contest, among other attractions. It’s yours to enjoy only about 20 minutes northeast of our Litchfield Hills spread.
Soaking up the sights, sounds, and flavors of a genuine Connecticut country fair alongside the premier pampering and woodsy beauty of Winvian Farm—well, that’s an altogether priceless vacation. Get in touch with us today to make it happen in time for one (or more!) of these annual bonanzas!
